Developing emotionally intelligent teaching practices that support engagement, wellbeing and learning success, especially for disadvantaged or vulnerable learners. The course focuses on self-awareness, emotional regulation, empathy and relationship-based strategies that create safe, supportive and inclusive learning environments.
Sending partners
Educational organisations involved in formal, non-formal and informal learning: kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, VET providers, adult education centres, training organisations, resource centres and other institutions active in the education field, established in Erasmus+ programme countries.
Participants
20–25 adults involved in education.
Course fee
According to the Erasmus+ Programme Guide: 80 EUR per participant per training day, including course preparation, training delivery, training materials, organisational and administrative costs, and 24-hour emergency support during the mobility.
Trainers
A multinational team of trainers from Portugal, Romania, Spain, Greece, Cyprus, Italy and Poland, experienced in Erasmus+ training and international education, including collaboration with SALTO and training activities delivered in more than 15 European countries.
Languages used
Working language: English.
Training materials are provided in English. Upon request, support or materials may be available in Spanish or French, depending on the group composition.
Profile of the participants
The course is designed for teachers, school staff and adult trainers working with learners who may face social, emotional or educational challenges.
Participants:
- Work with learners of different ages, abilities or backgrounds, including those at risk of exclusion
- May have previous experience or be beginners in social-emotional learning or emotional intelligence approaches
- Are interested in improving classroom climate, student engagement and wellbeing
- Are willing to actively participate in experiential activities, reflection and role-play
- Are open to intercultural learning and exchange of practices
- Are motivated to implement emotionally intelligent teaching strategies and to engage in preparatory and follow-up activities
- Aim to strengthen the European dimension of their institution through inclusive and wellbeing-oriented practices
Objectives
- Understand the role of emotional intelligence in teaching and learning
- Develop self-awareness and emotional regulation as educators
- Strengthen empathy and relationship-building with learners
- Apply strategies to support motivation, resilience and engagement
- Manage challenging behaviours through supportive and restorative approaches
- Create safe, inclusive and emotionally supportive learning environments
- Develop an action plan for integrating EQ strategies into classroom practice
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Recognise emotional factors that influence learning and behaviour
- Apply self-regulation and stress management techniques in classroom situations
- Use empathy and active listening to build trust with learners
- Implement social-emotional learning activities that support wellbeing and resilience
- Respond constructively to challenging behaviour using restorative and supportive strategies
- Design classroom routines that promote emotional safety and positive relationships
- Develop and present an emotionally intelligent teaching action plan
- Plan follow-up and evaluation activities to ensure sustainable impact at classroom and institutional level

Day 1 – Understanding emotional intelligence in education
- Introductions, expectations and group-building activities
- What is emotional intelligence? Components and relevance for educators
- The impact of emotions on learning, behaviour and motivation
- Self-assessment: personal emotional strengths and triggers
- Reflection: emotional climate in participants’ classrooms
Day 2 – Self-awareness and emotional regulation
- Recognising stress signals and emotional reactions
- Techniques for emotional regulation and professional resilience
- Mindfulness and grounding strategies for educators
- Managing difficult classroom moments calmly and effectively
- Reflection and peer exchange
Day 3 – Empathy and relationship-building
- Active listening and perspective-taking exercises
- Building trust and psychological safety with learners
- Communication strategies for sensitive situations
- Role-play: supporting disengaged or distressed students
- Group reflection and feedback
Day 4 – Supporting disadvantaged learners through SEL
- Social-emotional learning activities for different age groups
- Strengthening motivation, confidence and resilience
- Trauma-aware and culturally responsive teaching principles
- Preventing conflict and promoting positive behaviour
- Group work: designing an SEL activity
Day 5 – Integration and sustainability
